IT’S TIME TO RELAX

Stress has become a way of life for most Americans today.  Everyone experiences stress at some time during their daily lives but for some it has become the norm.  This Indianapolis chiropractor will tell you that living with chronic stress can lead to anxiety, depression, and even serious health problems.

There are many different ways to deal with stress.  The following strategies can improve stress tolerance and help lessen the effects of stress on our health.

THINK POSITIVELY – Adopting the right attitude can convert a negative stress into a positive stress.  When it is hard to muster up any kind of optimism, try learning to recognize negative thoughts and replace them with constructive ones.

GET OUT AND ENJOY NATURE – Even though modern civilization has made everything more convenient, it has led to a decreased desire to connect with nature.  So, take a walk and “stop and smell the roses.”

A CUP OF TEA – Many people turn to coffee to give them a jolt of caffeine in a stressful time.  But consider drinking tea.  Research shows that substituting tea for 6 weeks helps lower stress and increase relaxation while helping to reduce inflammation which can have a positive effect on your heart health.

LAUGH – Humor relieves stress and anxiety by helping to put our troubles in perspective.  Laughter can boost the immune system, increase pain tolerance, enhance moods and even lower blood pressure.

LISTEN TO MUSIC – Music can serve as a powerful stress relief tool.  Singing or listening to music can reduce anxiety and calm a rapid heartbeat that leads to headaches.  Music can elevate moods and positively affect the immune system.

EXERCISE – Getting into physical shape can give you the best of both worlds as it affects the mind through the body.  Exercise can reduce depression, enhance heart and lung function, improve balance and posture….all while reducing stress.

BUILD A SUPPORT SYSTEM – Relationships are a key to health and happiness.  Loneliness can contribute to stress in both men and women.  Social support can boost your immune system and help you maintain a higher quality in life.

THE WARMTH OF TOUCH – It was once said 4 hugs a day help prevent depression, 8 hugs can lead to psychological stability and 12 hugs are needed for growth.  If hugging is not your thing, try getting a massage.  Massages have been shown to relieve stress and reduce anxiety.  Regular massages can reduce blood pressure and aid in better sleep patterns.  (Here at Meridian Chiropractic Clinic, we have 2 state certified and licensed massage therapists of staff.)

No matter what stress-relief methods works best for you, make it a habit to use them!
