Because even as a chiropractor, I couldn’t agree more…
We are all definitely familiar with ingredients like protein, fiber, antioxidants, vitamin C, but what about matrodextrin, high fructose corn syrup and growth hormones? This list seemed to start off good, right? There’s an old saying that says “you are what you eat” and if you think there’s any credence to that saying it might be a good idea to know exactly what you are putting in your body. Honestly, most of us just assume that what we eat is not bad for us and what goes in is what we end up wanting it to be. But if you really take a close look at most items on the grocery store shelf, you might be surprised at what you find.
Today most of us live in a world that has an over abundance of options of any item we want at the super market. With so many options usually comes the idea of better prices, and built as we are, we almost instinctively go after whats the lowest cost item. We should never think more of our wallet then our health.
When we really dissect through all of the thousands of products we can choose from we realize that most of them all come back to the same four or five main conglomerates. So, in reality, looking for the best deal is not what we should spend our time on, but what is most REAL. What is meant by this phrase? I would venture to say that just about anyone would say that corn is real. And that’s true… corn is real. Yet, when that same “real” corn is broken down and then genetically altered into all kinds of other ingredients that will then go into our food, this is where the problem begins with our food.
The most common substance that has been derived form a real food item is high fructose corn syrup. High fructose corn syrup, despite what we have been taught and advertised, is neither healthy nor natural and is at the front of the ever growing list of substances that have been created from other natural foods, like corn. This pandemic is showing up all over the place in almost everything you put into your mouth today. Almost every item you pull from the shelf , if you look at the ingredients you will find these “real” substances showing up, From the meats to the pastas and grains, they are there. Much research and study has been shown that links these substances with all kinds of diseases and especially OBESITY.
For the sake of your health this is why it is important for you to read labels. The real question then is what exactly should I be looking for? Well to begin with why not consider one of the easiest steps to getting real food and start by shopping for organics. The word organics could be summed up or defined as food grown the old fashioned way, the real food without any hormones, unnatural fillers or genetically altered substances that we normally see. If organics are just too expensive or not readily available than try all natural foods, foods that have 5 or less ingredients on the label. With just a few of these simple yet powerful changes you are guaranteed to become healthier and be truly what you eat.
